a declaration of soulful intent

creating a personal mission statement for 2025

a declaration of soulful intent

Every year, as the calendar turns, I dedicate time to an annual ritual of intention setting—a practice that has become both grounding and a source of inspiration for the months ahead. It’s my way of envisioning the year to come, creating a space where dreams, values, and focus points take shape visually through the creation of an intention board. As part of this process, I often pull inspiration cards to guide me and offer clarity on where to anchor my focus.

This year, the card I pulled carried a unique invitation: to create a mission statement for my soul. Guided by a series of reflective prompts, I uncovered the threads of purpose that weave together my passions, aspirations, and motivations—the essence of who I am. The result of this process is what I am calling, a declaration of soulful intent—my personal mission statement for 2025 and a reminder of who I am, how I want to feel and serve others, and the grounding I need to live my intentions fully in the year ahead.

In addition to creating an intention board each year, I also select a word of the year—a single, guiding focus that encapsulates my intentions and aspirations. For 2025, my word is root—a choice that likely won’t surprise those who know me and the work I’ve started this year. This word represents everything I wish to embody in the year ahead: rooting in my truth, my values, and the courage to stand firmly within myself, while also reaching out to cultivate deeper connection, meaning, and purpose. Every action I take and every decision I make will be infused with this intention—to ground myself in what truly matters. This declaration, paired with my annual collage and anchored by my word of the year, serves as both a map and a mantra, using my intuition to guide me as I step boldly into the year ahead.

i am the roots
that reach deep,
anchoring in soil, rich with story and struggle,
seeking nourishment from truth,and
the courage to stand tall in storms.

i am the hands
that extend,
bridging divides,
weaving threads of compassion and understanding
into tapestries that heal.

i am the voice
that rises,
not loud,
but steady,
to carry the untold,
to unravel narratives that wound
and reweave them with threads of humanity.

i am the passion
ignited by injustice,
compelled to mend the fractures
left by systems that forgot the soul.

i am the change
fueled by hope,
motivated by the quiet insistence of a better way,
drawn forward by the promise of belonging,
by the vision of a world where care is currency.

i am the stillness
that welcomes rest,
turning away from the grind of routine
to embrace the sacred rhythm of ritual.
In the pause, I find renewal;
in the quiet, I hear the whispers of my soul.

i will feel rooted
even as I stretch toward the sky—
a balance
of grounded purpose
and
fearless becoming.

i will be a guide
a gentle disruptor,
a cultivator of spaces
where bravery blooms
and healing takes root.

this is my intention
and
my soul’s purpose
etched in the marrow of my being—
to stand firmly,
to reach deeply,
to grow boldly, and
to ground others in the strength to do the same.

Want to create your own statement of soulful intent?

Follow the steps below to create your own unique, deeply personal, and poetic declaration of soulful intent. This practice is designed to align with your essence and aspirations. Use the structure and format provided to tap into your intuition as you craft your statement and discover your word of the year.

1. reflection of you

Start by reflecting on these key areas of your life:

  • Who you are: What defines your essence and values?
  • What drives you: What passions, motivations, or causes ignite your purpose?
  • How you want to grow: Who do you hope to become?
  • How you want to serve: What impact do you want to have on others and the world?
  • How you want to feel: What emotions and grounding states do you want to cultivate in your life?

Use the prompts provided earlier to dive deeper into these questions if needed.

2. “I am” statements

Select words or metaphors that symbolize key aspects of your soul’s purpose. For example:

  • I am the roots: A metaphor for your grounding and connection to your truth.
  • I am the hands: Representing your ability to connect, heal, or serve.
  • I am the voice: Highlighting your desire to express and uplift.

Feel free to use other metaphors or phrases that resonate with your unique identity.

3. metaphors and images

For each metaphor or statement, write a short stanza that reflects:

  • What it means to you.
  • How it embodies your purpose or role in the world.
  • How it connects to your passions, growth, and service.

Example:
I am the light
that shines in dark places,
illuminating paths once unseen,
revealing the beauty hidden within shadows.

4. statements of intention

Shift from “I am” statements to “I will” or “This is my intention” to capture your aspirations and goals. For example:

  • I will be a guide: How you hope to serve others or grow in your journey.
  • This is my intention: A summary of your soul’s purpose.

5. organize and format

Organize your declaration into distinct sections, using formatting to emphasize transitions:

  • Use headings like I am, I will, and This is my intention.
  • Break the text into stanzas for rhythm and flow.

6. embrace poetic expression

Let your words flow naturally, embracing the poetic tone of the format. Use:

  • Metaphors and imagery to bring depth to your statements.
  • Repetition to emphasize key ideas or themes.
  • Rhythm and structure to create a sense of grounding and intention.

7. read and refine

Once complete, read your declaration aloud. Adjust the flow, wording, or structure to ensure it feels authentic and resonates deeply with your soul.

8. finding your word of the year

Once you’ve written your declaration, take time to sit with it in quiet reflection. Read it slowly, letting the words resonate and sink in. As you do, ask yourself:

  • What is the central theme or feeling that ties my declaration together?
  • What single word captures the essence of my intentions and aspirations for the year ahead?
  • How can this word guide me in grounding my actions and decisions throughout the year?

Don’t overthink it. Note the first words that pop into your mind and continue reflecting and refining until you’ve found one word which feels like a distilled expression of your intentions—a touchstone to keep you rooted in your soul’s purpose as you navigate the year. Your word of the year acts as both a guide and a mantra, helping you stay aligned with the values, emotions, and goals reflected in your declaration.

Write your chosen word somewhere visible—on your intention board, a journal, or even as a daily reminder on your phone. Let it serve as a compass for how you live, grow, and serve in the coming year.

I also invite you to share your word of the year in the comments here. Having your intentions witnessed by others is a powerful way to amplify your commitment and create a sense of shared accountability and connection. It’s an opportunity to celebrate your journey and inspire others as we all root into our unique paths for the year ahead.
